It’s a hideout. A tunnel. A fortress. A secret clubhouse—and quite possibly the most exciting thing in the entire house.
This little poem is dedicated to every curious ferret who has ever discovered that sometimes the simplest toys are the very best ones.
The Ferret in the Box
There’s something moving in that box,
Two little eyes appear.
A tiny nose comes peeking out—
I think a ferret’s here!
Whiskers twitch and bright eyes shine,
He’s watching all you do.
Should he come out and join the fun,
Or wait and spy on you?
A furry head pops through the hole,
Then disappears from sight.
You call his name—he peeks again,
His eyes are shining bright.
The box becomes a secret fort,
A tunnel and a den.
He races out, he dances round,
Then jumps right back again.
You bought him toys and cozy beds,
A hammock soft and new.
But give that little ferret a box—
And suddenly…
That’s the BEST toy too!
He’ll dig and bounce and hide inside,
Then peek out with delight.
He’ll steal a sock and stash it there,
Perhaps he’ll stay all night.
That’s life when you belong to one
Small ferret full of cheer.
You never know what comes next…
But there’s always mischief near.
So when two little eyes appear
From somewhere they should not,
Just smile and enjoy the adventure—
You’ve got a ferret in the box!
Why Do Ferrets Love Boxes So Much?
Anyone who lives with ferrets knows how much they enjoy exploring enclosed spaces.
Cardboard boxes give them opportunities to hide, dig, investigate and pop in and out—all behaviors that appeal to a naturally curious ferret.
You can make a simple box even more entertaining by cutting several ferret-sized entrances and connecting it to another box or tunnel.
Just make sure there are no staples, tape, sharp edges or other materials your ferret could chew or swallow.
Sometimes the best ferret enrichment doesn’t come from a pet store at all.
Sometimes…
it’s just a box.
